This plug and play adapter lets you use a USB port as a serial port. Many devices have serial port connections (PDAs, Digital Cameras, Cell Phones, GPS units, and other instruments) but many new computers do not have serial ports. The adapter is 1.5 Feet in length to give you the flexibility you need and features indicator lights for power, transmit and receive signals to give you visual peace-of-mind that the cable is communicating with your device. These features add importand functionality to your purchase without adding to the price. The adapter is designed to enumerate itself as a standard COM port. This means that legacy serial devices can be used in new systems via the USB port just as they were used in previous systems employing older bus standards.
Using USB as the interface for serial peripherals provides many other advantages as well. For instance, users need not concern themselves with resource issues existing on the ISA bus when adding new devices--such as selecting I/O address and IRQ. Another advantage of USB is Plug-and-Play capability; the user merely plugs the device in and the computer immediately configures it. An additional user friendly feature is hot-swap capability; the computer need not be powered down before plugging in a new device.
