The 8510 is an isolated RS-485 repeater module. Used in combination with the
8520, the 8510 can extend a remote signal conditioning network to incorporate
2,048 different devices. Like the 8520, the 8510 repeater contains a "Self Tuner"
chip on the module. This chip auto-tunes the data baud rate and the data format
automatically across the whole network. The RS-485 specification, under which
a 8000 series system operates, requires that modules be placed no more than
1.2 Km (4,000 feet) from the host computer. This distance restriction ensures
that the signal does not degrade before it reaches the PC. However, by using
a network of 8510 repeaters, a 8000 series system can be extended to communicate
over 1.2 Km distances without compromising signal integrity. Further, by using
the 8510 module, speeds of up to 115 kbps can be maintained even over these
distances. Another advantage to the 8510 is that, unlike many other manufacturers'
repeaters, it provides 3000VDC isolation protection. Without this protection,
the entire network could be destroyed by lightning or other outside transient
high voltage. |
